The market hall and the open-air market
Valence covered market, a bright building set in the heart of the centre, gathers cheesemongers, market gardeners and producers from the Rhône valley. On Saturday morning, the open-air market spills over onto the nearby squares: olives, Picodon goat cheeses from the Drôme, lavender honeys and bunches of thyme perfume the aisles. Meeting there, basket in hand, is a simple and joyful way to get to know each other.
Anne-Sophie Pic’s table
The Maison Pic, three-star rated for generations, embodies Valence’s culinary art. You do not come every day, of course: the neighbouring bistros carry on the same love of produce with real talent. Dauphinois gratin, ravioles, Rhône fish, lamb from the Diois: the menus of the small restaurants in the centre tell the story of a whole region. A chance to talk at length while slowly enjoying the meal.
Pogne, suisse and clairette
You cannot leave Valence without tasting a suisse, a shortbread biscuit shaped like a tiny Swiss guard, or a pogne, a brioche flavoured with orange-blossom water. For a toast, the nearby hillsides provide Côtes du Rhône, Saint-Péray and Clairette de Die, light and sparkling. On Lyad, members from Valence share their favourite spots; it is up to you to find someone to raise a glass with.
